Four Dead, Including NYPD Officer, in Targeted Attack

A deadly mass shooting shook Midtown Manhattan Monday evening when a heavily armed gunman opened fire inside a high-rise office tower, killing four people—including an NYPD officer—and injuring another.
Timeline of the Attack
Shortly after 6:30 p.m., surveillance footage captured the suspect, Shane Devon Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas, stepping out of a double-parked BMW on Park Avenue. Armed with an M4-style rifle, he entered the lobby of 345 Park Avenue and immediately began shooting.
Among his first victims was Officer Didarul Islam, 36, a Bronx-based NYPD officer working a paid security detail. Officer Islam, a husband and father of two with a third child on the way, was killed in the line of duty.
Tamura then fired on additional civilians inside the lobby, killing two men and a woman. A fifth victim—an NFL employee—was critically injured and remains in stable condition following surgery.
Violence Continued on Upper Floors
After the lobby assault, Tamura accessed an elevator—reportedly taking the wrong one—and ascended to the 33rd floor. There, inside Rudin Management offices, he shot another individual before turning the weapon on himself.
Suspect’s Note and Mental Health Concerns
A three-page handwritten note was found in Tamura’s jacket, in which he claimed to suffer from CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) and blamed the NFL for neglecting brain injuries in athletes. The note included the plea, “Study my brain, please. I’m sorry.”
Despite these claims, investigators have found no record of Tamura playing football beyond high school or having any professional ties to the NFL. Authorities are exploring whether he intended to reach NFL offices in the building but accessed the wrong floor.
Cross-Country Journey
Tamura’s vehicle was traced from Las Vegas through several states—Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa—before he entered New Jersey and arrived in Manhattan just hours before the attack.
City Response
Mayor Eric Adams praised Officer Islam’s courage, calling him a “true-blue New Yorker” who gave his life to protect others. Officials confirmed the shooter acted alone, and there is no ongoing threat to the public. The building and surrounding area were temporarily placed on lockdown as police cleared the scene.
The NFL advised New York-based employees to work remotely in the aftermath, while building management pledged increased security.
