The Night Before Everything Changed: Remembering the Eve of September 11

On the evening of September 10, 2001, millions of Americans went to bed expecting the following morning to be just another Tuesday.

Parents tucked their children in for the night. Firefighters, police officers and emergency medical personnel rested between shifts. Airline passengers packed their bags and prepared for early flights. Employees set their alarms for another day at the office.

Some said goodnight to their loved ones without knowing it would be for the final time.

No one could have imagined that within hours, the nation—and the world—would be forever changed.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes. Two were flown into the World Trade Center towers in New York City, another struck the Pentagon in Virginia, and United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers and crew members fought back.

Nearly 3,000 innocent people were killed.

Behind that number were thousands of individual lives: mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, husbands, wives, friends, coworkers and first responders who ran toward danger while others desperately tried to escape it.

Tonight, on the eve of the 25th anniversary of the attacks, it is difficult not to think about the ordinary moments taking place exactly 25 years ago.

The unfinished conversations. The plans being made for later in the week. The lunches being packed. The uniforms laid out for the morning. The alarm clocks being set by people who had no way of knowing what awaited them.

It is also a reminder of how quickly life can change and why the simplest moments with the people we love should never be taken for granted.

For the families who lost someone on September 11, the pain did not end when the smoke cleared. Survivors, first responders and recovery workers continued to carry the physical and emotional consequences of that day for decades. Many later became sick or died from illnesses connected to their work at the attack sites.

September 11 is remembered not only for an unimaginable act of terror, but also for the courage displayed during humanity’s darkest moments.

Firefighters climbed stairwells as the towers burned. Police officers and emergency personnel helped guide strangers to safety. Passengers aboard Flight 93 took action after learning what was happening, sacrificing themselves and preventing the aircraft from reaching its intended target.

Across the country, Americans stood together. Neighbors helped neighbors. Strangers comforted one another. Communities gathered at fire stations, churches and public spaces to mourn, pray and offer support.

Tonight, we remember the people who went to sleep on September 10, 2001, believing they had many more tomorrows ahead of them.

We remember those who never returned home, those who rushed into danger, those who survived and those who continue to live with the consequences of that morning.

Twenty-five years later, their names, their stories and their sacrifices must never be forgotten.

We will never forget September 11, 2001.
