PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Longtime Philadelphia 76ers public address announcer Matt Cord revealed Wednesday morning on the Preston & Steve Show on 93.3 WMMR that he is putting his retirement plans on hold and returning for one more season.

Cord previously announced that he would step away following the 2025-26 season, ending his 28-year run behind the microphone. He has since changed course and will return as the Sixers’ in-arena announcer for the 2026-27 season.

Cord has been a familiar voice to generations of Philadelphia basketball fans since joining the organization in 1998. His energetic player introductions and memorable calls have made him an important part of the Sixers’ game-day experience.

Calls for Cord to return grew louder following the Sixers’ major offseason moves. Allen Iverson also reportedly encouraged him to come back, telling Cord that his story with the team still had one more chapter.

Cord’s return will mark his 29th season with the organization, allowing Sixers fans to hear his unmistakable voice at Xfinity Mobile Arena for at least one more year.

The Sixers will begin the regular season on the road against the New York Knicks on Oct. 20. Cord is expected to return to the microphone for the team’s home opener against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Oct. 22.
