”Funeral Held for Fire Police Captain and Former Chief Ed Margavich

CROYDON, Pa. – For the first time in its 70-year history, Station 14 of the Third District Fire Company is mourning the line-of-duty death of one of its own.

Edward “Ed” Margavich, a lifelong member and dedicated servant of the fire service, died last week at the age of 80 following injuries sustained while responding to a fire. He was serving as Fire Police Captain at the time of his death and was also a past Fire Chief of the Third District Fire Company.

Outside the firehouse, the American flag flies at half-staff. A growing memorial now sits on the front steps, where neighbors and fellow firefighters have placed flowers, notes, and mementos. Parked outside the bay doors is Margavich’s personal vehicle—fittingly painted fire-truck red.

“This is a big loss for us, it really is,” said Public Information Officer Joe Gasper. “Ed wasn’t just a firefighter—he was a mentor, a leader, and a friend to everyone here.”

Margavich answered his final alarm just before dawn on Friday, August 8, around 5:30 a.m. Crews had been dispatched to a van fire in Croydon, which quickly spread to a nearby home. Authorities later determined the blaze to be arson.

Over his decades of service, Margavich wore many helmets—volunteer firefighter, Chief, Fire Police Captain, and community advocate. Known for his steady leadership and selfless nature, he became a fixture of the firehouse and a trusted protector of the Croydon community.

Today, firefighters, family, and community members gather to pay their final respects to a man who spent his life in service to others
