A confrontation between two drivers turned deadly in downtown Allentown early Sunday morning, after what authorities say began as a road rage incident and ended in a fatal shooting.

Police responded to the intersection of Fifth and Hamilton Streets at approximately 3:37 a.m., where they found evidence of a violent altercation between two vehicles — an Audi with two occupants and a Toyota Prius driven by a single individual.

According to a statement released by the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office, video surveillance captured the moments leading up to the shooting. The vehicles were seen traveling west along the 400 block of West Hamilton Street, where the Audi reportedly overtook the Prius. As both vehicles crossed Fifth Street, the Audi forced the Prius to the curb.

Both vehicles came to a stop, and the driver of the Audi exited the car wielding a metal bat, similar to those used for baseball or softball training. He approached the Prius and swung the bat, striking the driver’s side door.

At that point, the driver of the Prius fired a single shot from a 9mm handgun, striking the Audi driver. The Audi driver then dropped the bat and moved away from the vehicle. Emergency services transported him to Lehigh Valley Health Network, where he was pronounced dead at 4:51 a.m.

The Lehigh County Coroner has ruled the death a homicide. The deceased has been identified as a 35-year-old man from Whitehall Township, though his name has not yet been released.

Following the shooting, the Prius driver drove approximately a block and a half from the scene, parked, and called 911. He remained at that location until officers arrived. Police say the 9mm handgun was legally possessed, and the driver was detained for questioning. No charges have been filed.

The second occupant of the Audi, who remained at the scene, was uninjured. His identity has also not been released.

The investigation is ongoing. Officials have not disclosed whether any additional charges may be considered as the case develops.
