Wilson Borough, PA – A fire that erupted at the former Dixie Cup Factory in Wilson Borough has been deemed suspicious, according to Fire Chief Joe Sipel. He indicated that there was no heat source or electricity in the building, raising concerns about the circumstances surrounding the fire.
As of now, the cause remains undetermined, and an investigation is in progress. Firefighters responded to a three-alarm fire early Friday morning, prompting a large response from multiple fire companies throughout Northampton County.
Fire trucks and first responders surrounded the former factory, working vigorously to control the flames. Chief Sipel noted that the fire was mostly contained within about half an hour, but the structure’s size and layout at South 24th Street and Washington Boulevard posed challenges.
“The building measures 267 feet from one end to the other,” Sipel explained. “Water was not an issue; the main concern was covering such a large area.”
He also mentioned that the age of the building could lead to a long day of monitoring hotspots. “Because it’s an older structure with many spaces and complexities, we’re still cutting and ensuring everything is extinguished,” he added.
When crews arrived at approximately 6:45 a.m. on Friday, they discovered that the fire had started on the fourth floor and had spread to the roof. The investigation into the cause of the fire continues.
