U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has purchased a large industrial property just north of Interstate 78 in Berks County, according to documents filed Monday, marking a significant federal real estate acquisition in the region.

The property includes a massive 527,000-square-foot warehouse, positioned near one of eastern Pennsylvania’s busiest transportation corridors. The size and location of the building point to a large-scale federal operation, though officials have not publicly detailed how the site will be used.

The purchase was made through the federal government under the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE operations nationwide. While no formal announcement has been issued, the acquisition aligns with broader federal efforts to secure large facilities capable of supporting immigration processing, detention, and administrative operations.

A Strategic Location

Situated just north of I-78, the warehouse offers quick access to the Lehigh Valley, Harrisburg region, and eastern metro areas — a logistical advantage for large federal programs. The surrounding area is primarily industrial and rural, making it suitable for high-capacity operations without dense residential development nearby.

Real estate filings show the transaction was finalized earlier this week, transferring the property into federal ownership after years of private industrial use.

Community Questions Ahead

The lack of public explanation has already raised questions among local leaders and residents about what the facility will become and how it may impact traffic, public services, and the broader community.

Berks County has previously housed immigration-related facilities, making the region familiar with federal detention and processing operations. However, the sheer size of this newly acquired warehouse far exceeds past sites.

Local officials are expected to seek clarification from federal agencies in the coming days regarding intended use, staffing, security measures, and timelines for any renovations or operational rollout.

What’s Next

At this stage, ICE has not released:

• A projected opening date
• The number of people the facility could hold or process
• Whether it will serve as a detention center, processing hub, or administrative complex

As more details emerge, First Source News will continue tracking developments surrounding the federal government’s newest major property investment in Berks County.
