A Philadelphia police officer was killed and another was wounded after they were shot early Saturday while responding to a report of a man with a gun in West Philadelphia.
Police said officers were sent to the 100 block of North 52nd Street shortly after 12:20 a.m. When they arrived, they encountered gunfire. Both officers were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center for treatment.
Officials identified the officer who died as Shane Seiber, 40, a 10-year veteran assigned to the 19th District. He was shot three times and later died at the hospital. Seiber is survived by his wife, a 7-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter.
The second officer, a 33-year-old father of five, was shot 12 times and remained hospitalized in stable condition, according to Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel. Officials said he was still seriously injured.
Police said the suspect fled after the initial shooting and fired at additional officers, who were not struck. Officers later found him in a tree and took him into custody. Investigators recovered two handguns and a shotgun; one handgun belonged to one of the wounded officers.
The suspect’s identity and any charges had not been publicly announced at the time of publication. The investigation remains ongoing.
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro ordered U.S. and state flags to fly at half-staff in honor of Officer Seiber.
