SOUTH WHITEHALL TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The Lehigh County Coroner has confirmed the identity of the man who was fatally shot by police on Wednesday afternoon.
Gary Moyer, 73, of South Whitehall Township, was pronounced dead shortly after 3 p.m. in the 100 block of N. 38th Street. According to the coroner’s office, he was declared dead at the scene. Lehigh County District Attorney Gavin Holihan reported that officers initially employed less-than-lethal force; however, Moyer continued to advance toward them. As a result, the officers discharged their firearms, firing approximately six shots.
Following the incident, authorities discovered a note in Moyer’s home, and preliminary findings indicate that he had been dealing with long-term health issues.
The investigation is being conducted by the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office, the Lehigh County Homicide Task Force, the Pennsylvania State Police Forensics Services Unit, and the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office. Further details will be released as the investigation proceeds.
