The popular WMMR morning show “Preston & Steve” is facing another major change as longtime on-air personality Nick McIlwain has announced he is leaving the show after more than two decades with the station.

McIlwain confirmed his exit by saying, “Another loss at WMMR… I’m just at the point now where I feel like I’m ready for a change.” His announcement follows months of turbulence inside the station, including a series of staffing changes and internal restructuring.

A Tough Year at WMMR

McIlwain’s departure comes after a stretch of major transitions:

  • Earlier this year, longtime co-host Kathy Romano was unexpectedly let go, shocking both staff and listeners.
  • The station has been navigating the aftermath of the sudden passing of legendary WMMR DJ Pierre Robert, a loss that deeply affected the Philadelphia radio community.
  • Staff have previously described the year as filled with “ups and downs,” with McIlwain noting that in recent months, there were “more downs than ups.”

Many listeners have expressed concern about WMMR’s direction as familiar voices have disappeared in a short span.

What Happens to the Show Now

The Preston & Steve Show will continue with its core duo, who are still under contract for several years. The station is expected to elevate existing staff to fill production and on-air support roles.

At this time, WMMR has not announced who — if anyone — will replace McIlwain in his on-air capacity.

What’s Next for McIlwain

McIlwain said he does not yet have a definitive next step but is looking forward to “figuring things out” and exploring new opportunities. After more than 20 years with the show, his departure marks the end of a major era in Philadelphia morning radio.

Impact on Listeners

“Preston & Steve” has been a staple in the region for years, known for its humor, chemistry, and continuity. With the departures of both McIlwain and Romano — two major personalities who helped define the show’s identity — longtime fans are preparing for a noticeably different dynamic moving forward.

More updates are expected as WMMR continues to adjust its lineup.
