CAMDEN, N.J. — A Camden City firefighter has tragically died in the line of duty after falling into the Delaware River while conducting maintenance on a department rescue boat along the waterfront near 1 Riverside Drive.
Officials confirmed the firefighter was working on or near a fire department vessel at the marina when the incident occurred late this morning. During the maintenance operation, the firefighter fell into the river, where conditions were extremely cold.
A MAYDAY was transmitted and a full water rescue response was immediately launched as crews rushed to locate and assist the firefighter in the water.
Emergency responders were able to pull the firefighter from the river and lifesaving efforts were initiated. Despite those efforts, the firefighter was later pronounced deceased.
Authorities have not yet released the firefighter’s identity as next of kin notifications continue.
The incident remains under investigation as officials work to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the fall.
The loss marks a devastating line of duty death for the community of Camden and the entire fire service.
