HARFORD, Pa. — The Harford Volunteer Fire Company says they suffered a devastating loss overnight when their Rescue Engine caught fire while returning from an assist for a crash on the interstate.

According to the department, an electrical failure sparked a fire inside the cab while the truck was traveling. The operator was able to safely pull to the shoulder, and the two firefighters onboard attempted to save equipment before flames overtook the cab — all within just three minutes.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported. The fire department says insurance will help but won’t cover the total cost of the truck and the equipment lost.

In a statement, officials called it a “devastating loss for our department and our community,” adding that they’re thankful everyone made it out safely.

Nearby departments responded quickly, helping to save tens of thousands of dollars in gear. The fire was contained to the cab, sparing much of the truck body and newly purchased hose from their 2024 AFG grant.

The department thanked surrounding agencies and asked for community support as they begin recovery efforts.
