BENSALEM, Pa. — A freight train derailment in Bensalem Township prompted a large-scale emergency response Tuesday afternoon after multiple rail cars left the tracks near East Bristol Road and Grove Avenue, leading officials to issue a temporary shelter-in-place order for nearby residents.
According to Bensalem officials, the eastbound CSX freight train consisted of 72 cars, with approximately 13 to 16 cars derailing shortly before 2:15 p.m. Emergency crews quickly responded amid concerns that several of the rail cars were carrying hazardous materials.
Police, firefighters, EMS personnel, hazardous materials teams, and Bucks County emergency responders established a command post while assessing the damaged rail cars. Residents in portions of Bensalem Township were instructed to remain indoors, close windows and doors, and shut off ventilation systems as a precaution.
Following inspections by hazmat specialists, officials confirmed that although hazardous materials were present aboard several rail cars, no leaks were detected and there was no threat to public safety. The shelter-in-place and evacuation orders were lifted later Tuesday afternoon, allowing residents to return to their homes and businesses.
No injuries were reported as a result of the derailment.
Cleanup operations remain ongoing, with CSX crews working to remove the derailed rail cars and restore service. Bristol Road remains closed in the immediate area while recovery efforts continue, and the cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
First Source News will continue to monitor the investigation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
