NEW YORK — Vincent Pastore, the veteran actor best known for portraying Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero in HBO’s iconic series The Sopranos, has died at the age of 80.
According to his longtime manager, Pastore was found deceased at his home on City Island in New York after friends and neighbors became concerned when they had not heard from him for several days. His death was confirmed Saturday.
Pastore became one of television’s most recognizable character actors after starring in The Sopranos, where he played one of Tony Soprano’s closest friends. His portrayal of “Big Pussy” helped shape the critically acclaimed crime drama, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest television series ever produced.
Although many fans remember him for The Sopranos, Pastore built a lengthy career portraying mobsters, detectives, and other tough-guy characters in both television and film. His credits included appearances in Goodfellas, Carlito’s Way, Awakenings, Gotti, and numerous guest roles on popular television series.
Before entering acting, Pastore served in the U.S. Navy and didn’t begin his Hollywood career until later in life. Despite getting a late start, he became one of the industry’s most recognizable supporting actors, earning the respect of fellow performers and fans alike.
