PITTSBURGH, Pa. — James Copenhaver, one of the attendees shot during the assassination attempt at a Donald Trump campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, has died. He was 76.
Copenhaver died Wednesday, Sept. 23, at Allegheny Health Network’s West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, according to his family’s attorney, Joseph Feldman. The family said he was surrounded by loved ones.
Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday said Copenhaver died from complications stemming from his rally wounds. The family’s statement did not provide medical details about his death.
Copenhaver was in the bleachers at the Butler Farm Show grounds on July 13, 2024, when gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire from a nearby rooftop. Copenhaver was shot twice, sustaining wounds to his arm and abdomen. He underwent multiple surgeries and continued to experience lasting effects from his injuries.
The shooting killed rally attendee Corey Comperatore and wounded Copenhaver and David Dutch. Trump, who was the Republican presidential candidate at the time, was grazed by a bullet.
In a statement shared through Feldman, Copenhaver’s family remembered him as a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and a veteran who was proud of his service to the country.
