BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Six people were killed and several others were hurt when a three-alarm fire swept through a two-story home in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood early Thursday.
The fire was reported shortly before 1:40 a.m. at a home on 58th Street. Officials said it appears to have started on the second floor before spreading through the building. Flames were coming from the windows as firefighters arrived.
Four adults were pronounced dead at the scene. A man and a woman died on the way to the hospital. Another victim is in critical condition. Four residents and three firefighters had injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
Crews brought the fire under control but stayed at the scene into Thursday morning. They kept pouring water on the home and checked behind walls and siding for hidden fire. The front of the house was heavily charred, and much of the outside was destroyed.
Investigators found two lithium-ion batteries at the scene and are working to determine whether they played a role. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Several residents were displaced. The American Red Cross is helping them with temporary housing.
On Thursday morning, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the fire “devastating” and praised FDNY firefighters for going in “no matter what the level of danger is.” He also said e-bike fires across the city have topped 400 this year.
“They are something that can cause people to lose their lives as well as their livelihoods,” Mamdani said. “We are really looking at every avenue we have to keep them safe.”
The investigation is ongoing. Check back for updates.
