Wyomissing, Pa. – First responders paid their final respects to Wyomissing Fire Captain Derrick Nester at St. Paul’s Church in Amity Township on Saturday. Captain Nester tragically passed away about two weeks ago, and the U.S. Fire Administration reported that he died from an apparent heart attack following an overtime shift, where he responded to numerous calls. Chief John Phillips of the Wyomissing Police shared, “He was the type of person who was willing to help.” Fire departments, police, and EMS from across the area came to honor Captain Nester, who was known for his selfless dedication to helping people in need. Throughout his career, Captain Nester received multiple honors, including being named Firefighter of the Year in 2010 for his efforts to rescue a trapped person from a burning apartment in Wyomissing. The fire department released a statement praising Captain Nester for his selfless and unwavering commitment to helping others.
