UPPER SAUCON TOWNSHIP, Pa. Heavy rain Monday evening led to dangerous flash flooding that shut down a major roadway and forced multiple rescues in parts of Southern Lehigh and neighboring Upper Bucks counties.
Emergency crews closed both northbound and southbound lanes of Route 309 in Upper Saucon Township for several hours after water rose to waist-deep levels, making the highway impassable.
Police and fire crews stationed nearby directed traffic away from flooded sections while working quickly to assist several stranded drivers. Multiple vehicles were reported stalled in rising water, prompting water rescues and a strong warning for drivers to avoid the area until conditions improved.
Officials say the flooding was fueled by a sudden downpour that overwhelmed storm drains. The closures and detours remained in place late into the evening as crews worked to clear the roadway and ensure safety.
Authorities are urging motorists to never drive through standing water, noting that just a few inches can disable a vehicle or sweep it off the road.
