At 12:01 a.m. today (Oct. 1, 2025), the federal government officially shut down after Congress failed to pass funding legislation before the midnight deadline.

🔹 Why it happened:

Lawmakers could not reach an agreement on a temporary spending bill. Disputes over funding priorities—including health care subsidies—led to a complete stalemate.

🔹 Who’s affected:

About 750,000 federal workers face furloughs or unpaid work. The CDC will furlough around 64% of staff, while the NIH may lose up to 75% of its workforce. The FAA plans to furlough more than 11,000 employees, though air traffic controllers will remain on duty. National Parks may stay partially open but with limited staff and services.

🔹 What stays open:

Social Security, Medicare, national defense, and emergency services will continue.

🔹 What it means:

The shutdown threatens to disrupt public services, delay federal programs, and hurt the economy, costing hundreds of millions per day. This is the first U.S. government shutdown since 2018–2019.
