BROOKLYN, N.Y. — A veteran New York City firefighter has died in the line of duty after suffering a medical emergency while battling a massive blaze in Brooklyn Saturday night.

Firefighter Patrick D. Brady, 42, was working on the roof of a burning apartment building at 9407 Kings Highway in the Brownsville/East Flatbush area when he collapsed. Fellow firefighters and EMS personnel immediately provided lifesaving care before transporting him to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

Authorities say the fire had reached an “all-hands” status when Brady suffered a cardiac arrest while conducting roof operations. The FDNY confirmed his death as a line-of-duty death — marking the 1,163rd member of the department to die while serving the city.

An 11-Year Veteran and Family Man

Brady joined the FDNY in July 2014, first serving with Engine 227 before transferring to Ladder 120 in 2022. Known among colleagues as a dedicated and humble firefighter, he came from a long line of fire service heroes.

His two brothers — Jimmy and Brian Brady — both serve as FDNY firefighters, along with several other relatives. Brady is survived by his wife, Kara, and extended family members who described him as “devoted to the job and to his family.”

Outpouring of Support

Early Sunday morning, hundreds of firefighters gathered outside Brookdale Hospital to honor Brady as his body was carried out in a solemn dignified transfer.

Mayor Eric Adams and FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker expressed their condolences, calling Brady’s service “the embodiment of courage and commitment.”

“Firefighter Patrick Brady served New Yorkers with strength and pride,” Commissioner Tucker said. “His loss is felt deeply across the entire FDNY family.”

A Department in Mourning

Brady’s passing comes during a challenging time for the FDNY, following several recent line-of-duty deaths and injuries across the city. The department plans to hold full honors for the fallen firefighter, with funeral arrangements expected to be announced in the coming days.

Flags across all FDNY facilities are being flown at half-staff in his memory.

Community Response

Messages of sympathy have flooded social media from fire companies and residents across the region.
Many departments across the Northeast — including volunteer fire companies in New Jersey and Pennsylvania — have posted tributes honoring Brady’s service and sacrifice.

FirstSourceNews.net extends our condolences to the entire FDNY family, the Brady family, and all those impacted by this tragic loss.
