STATESVILLE, N.C. — A small plane crashed and burst into flames while attempting to land Thursday morning at Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina, according to federal officials.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said a Cessna C550 went down around 10:20 a.m. during its landing at the airport. Officials confirmed the aircraft erupted into a large fire following the crash.
Statesville Regional Airport also acknowledged the incident in a post on social media, referring to it as an aircraft emergency. Emergency crews responded to the scene shortly after the crash.
No immediate information was released regarding the number of people on board or the extent of any injuries.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the incident. The NTSB will lead the investigation and is expected to provide updates as more information becomes available
