AUSTIN, Texas — Federal investigators are examining whether a deadly mass shooting outside a popular downtown bar in Austin may have been motivated by terrorism, according to authorities.
The shooting occurred late Saturday night in the city’s busy Sixth Street entertainment district near Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden.
What Happened
According to the Austin Police Department, officers responded to reports of gunfire and discovered multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds outside the bar.
Police say the suspect fired from inside a vehicle before exiting and continuing to shoot in the crowded nightlife area. Responding officers confronted the suspect and fatally shot him at the scene.
Authorities confirmed that at least three people were killed. More than a dozen others were transported to local hospitals, several in critical condition.
FBI Investigating Terrorism Angle
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has joined the investigation through its Joint Terrorism Task Force. Officials say the case is being reviewed as a potential act of terrorism, though no final determination has been made.
Investigators are analyzing evidence recovered from the suspect, including items found in his vehicle, digital records, and surveillance video from the area. Law enforcement officials stated the suspect was not previously known to federal authorities for extremist activity.
Authorities emphasized that motive remains under investigation and that terrorism is one of several possibilities being explored.
Ongoing Investigation
Sixth Street was temporarily shut down following the shooting as police processed the crime scene. The area has since reopened with an increased law enforcement presence.
