HATFIELD TWP., Pa. — A hazardous materials incident shut down part of Route 309 in Hatfield Township Friday morning after a tractor-trailer began leaking chemicals onto the roadway, prompting a large emergency response.
The incident happened around 10:30 a.m. in the area of Bethlehem Pike near Trewigtown Road, where authorities say a commercial truck was actively leaking a hazardous substance into the southbound lanes.
Initial reports indicate the substance involved is believed to be hydrogen peroxide, a chemical commonly used in industrial and commercial applications. Emergency dispatch reports suggested multiple containers on the truck may have been compromised, allowing the material to spill onto the roadway and impact at least two lanes.
Fire crews, police, EMS, and specialized HazMat teams responded to the scene to assess the situation, contain the leak, and ensure public safety.
🚧 Route 309 southbound was shut down in the area as crews worked to control the spill and prevent further hazards to motorists.
