Bill to boost volunteer fire companies, other nonprofits stalls in pa

A bipartisan bill that volunteer fire companies and similar organizations claim is essential for their financial survival was not brought to a final vote before lawmakers left Harrisburg for the year.

The proposed legislation would permit nonprofits to accept credit, debit, and mobile payments for raffle ticket sales. These small games of chance are popular fundraisers for organizations like veterans’ groups.

Currently, however, the law only allows nonprofits to accept cash and checks. Advocates are calling for modernization, arguing that the existing policy is outdated, especially since cash is becoming less common in transactions.
