Providence, R.I. — Saturday, December 13, 2025

A shooting on the campus of Brown University Saturday afternoon left two people dead and eight others critically injured, prompting a large-scale law-enforcement response and extended shelter-in-place orders across the Ivy League campus.

The shooting occurred at approximately 4:05 p.m. inside the Barus & Holley Engineering Building, where students were attending classes and preparing for final exams. Gunfire sent students and staff scrambling for safety as campus officials immediately issued emergency alerts warning of an active shooter.

Emergency Response

Brown University activated its emergency notification system, instructing anyone on campus to lock doors, silence phones, and shelter in place. Multiple law-enforcement agencies responded, including Providence Police and federal partners, as officers secured buildings and searched the surrounding area.

Emergency medical crews transported the injured to nearby hospitals. Officials said the injured victims remain in critical but stable condition. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the victims were students, faculty members, or staff.

Suspect Status

The suspect remains at large. Police describe the individual as a male dressed in dark clothing, last seen fleeing the area on foot near Hope Street. Earlier reports suggesting a suspect had been taken into custody were later corrected by officials.

Law enforcement continues an extensive search of campus buildings and nearby neighborhoods as the investigation remains active.

Campus Impact

Brown University remains under heightened security as officers continue to clear buildings and account for students and staff. Classes and activities were disrupted as students sheltered in place across campus residence halls and academic buildings.

The shooting occurred during final exam preparations, intensifying fear and uncertainty throughout the university community. University officials are working with local authorities to provide support services, including counseling resources, for students and staff.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities are asking anyone with information related to the shooting to contact law enforcement immediately. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional updates are expected as officials release more details.

This is a developing story. Further information will be provided as it becomes available
