BRISTOL TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Three people are confirmed dead and at least 20 others were injured after a powerful explosion tore through a Bucks County nursing home Tuesday afternoon, triggering a massive emergency response and forcing the evacuation of dozens of residents just days before Christmas.

The explosion occurred shortly after 2:15 p.m. at a nursing and rehabilitation facility located along Tower Road in Bristol Township. First responders were initially dispatched for reports of a gas odor inside the building when an explosion erupted, causing heavy fire conditions and partial structural collapse.

Fire officials struck a third alarm, bringing crews from across Bucks County and neighboring areas to assist with rescues, fire suppression, and evacuation efforts.

Fatalities and Injuries

Authorities confirmed three fatalities as a result of the incident. Two victims were pronounced dead earlier in the response, and a third victim was later found deceased during extended search operations inside the damaged building.

At least 20 people were transported to area hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to serious. Several patients were taken to trauma centers due to burns, smoke inhalation, and blast-related injuries. Officials have not released the identities of the victims.

Emergency personnel initially reported multiple people trapped inside the facility. By late evening, officials said all residents and staff had been accounted for.

Rescue Efforts

Firefighters and EMS crews worked in dangerous conditions, navigating smoke-filled hallways and compromised sections of the structure to reach residents, many of whom had limited mobility. Some occupants were rescued through windows, while others were carried or assisted down stairwells.

Temporary reunification and assistance areas were established nearby to help families locate loved ones and receive updates.

Cause Under Investigation

Investigators believe the explosion may have been caused by a natural gas leak, though officials stress the exact cause has not yet been confirmed. Utility crews shut off gas and electric service to the building as a precaution.

Multiple agencies are involved in the investigation, including fire marshals and state utility officials. The scene remains active as structural assessments and evidence collection continue.

Community Impact

The explosion has deeply shaken the Bucks County community, particularly due to the vulnerability of the residents involved and the timing of the incident during the holiday season. Local officials and emergency management agencies are coordinating support services for displaced residents and their families.

Officials say updates will be released as more information becomes available.
