DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham firefighter died in the line of duty Thursday morning while crews battled a large building fire in southeast Durham. Two other firefighters were injured and taken to the hospital.

The fire was reported around 3:15 a.m. in the 400 block of Marly Drive, near South Miami Boulevard and Highway 70. Flames and smoke were seen coming through the roof as firefighters worked to control the blaze.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation confirmed the firefighter’s death and said it is assisting the Durham Fire Department. The two injured firefighters were expected to survive. Their names, along with the identity of the fallen firefighter, have not been released.

Officials asked the public to avoid the area as emergency crews responded. The cause of the fire has not been announced.

Our thoughts are with the Durham Fire Department, the fallen firefighter’s family and loved ones, the injured firefighters, and the Durham community.

The location and basic incident details are confirmed by the SBI and local reporting. WRAL reports the injured firefighters were taken to the hospital.
