A Minnesota man has been arrested after authorities say he impersonated an FBI agent in an attempt to secure the release of Luigi Mangione from a federal detention center in Brooklyn.

Federal prosecutors say the suspect, identified as 36-year-old Mark Anderson, arrived at the Metropolitan Detention Center claiming he was a federal agent acting on a judge’s order to release Mangione, who is currently being held on both federal and state charges.

According to court documents, Anderson told corrections staff he had official paperwork authorizing Mangione’s release. When asked to present proper credentials, he reportedly produced only a Minnesota driver’s license and several unrelated documents, raising immediate suspicion.

Authorities also say Anderson claimed to have weapons in his possession. A search of his bag allegedly uncovered a barbecue fork and a pizza cutter-style blade.

Anderson was taken into custody at the facility and later charged with impersonating a federal officer. He is expected to face the charges in federal court.

Who Is Luigi Mangione?

Mangione, 27, is being held in connection with the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan in December 2024. Prosecutors say he faces both state and federal murder charges, with federal authorities considering the death penalty.

Mangione has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody as legal proceedings continue.

Officials have not released a motive for Anderson’s alleged actions, and the investigation remains ongoing.

This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
