MIAMI, Fla. — Five people were killed and five others were injured after an Amazon cargo plane overran a runway at Miami International Airport Sunday afternoon, struck several vehicles and caught fire.

The crash happened around 2 p.m. as Prime Air Flight 7598 landed following a flight from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The Boeing 767-300 cargo plane, operated by 21 Air on behalf of Amazon, went off the northwest end of the airport’s diagonal runway before crossing a nearby roadway and hitting vehicles in an area surrounded by warehouses and other businesses.

Miami-Dade officials said five people were pronounced dead and five others were transported to area hospitals. Three of those injured were listed in critical condition, while the remaining two suffered less serious injuries. The aircraft’s pilots were reportedly among those hospitalized.

Authorities have not publicly identified the victims or clarified whether those killed were aboard the aircraft or inside vehicles struck during the crash.

More than 60 fire-rescue units and approximately 200 emergency personnel responded. Crews battled flames involving the aircraft and worked to control a fuel leak while rescuing people trapped in the wreckage and damaged vehicles.

All four runways were initially closed, and a ground stop was issued following the crash. Two runways later reopened, but delays and cancellations continued Monday morning. At least 65 flights had been canceled and more than 100 delayed as airport operations remained limited.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the aircraft overran the runway after landing. The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into what caused the crash.

Amazon and 21 Air said they are cooperating with investigators.

This remains a developing story. First Source News will provide additional information as it becomes available.
