SCHUYLKILL COUNTY, Pa. — New information has emerged in the case surrounding the death of Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Michael Pahira Jr., with reports indicating the commercial truck driver charged in the fatal crash was allegedly living in the United States illegally.

According to a statement from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security first obtained by the Boston Herald, the driver, Michael Bon, is a Haitian national who has allegedly been living in the United States illegally since June 2025.

The statement also alleges Bon obtained a commercial driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Bon is accused of driving the tractor-trailer that struck and killed Trooper Michael Pahira Jr. on Wednesday morning along Interstate 81 in Cass Township, Schuylkill County.

Investigators said Trooper Pahira was conducting a commercial vehicle safety inspection on another tractor-trailer when he was struck. The impact caused a catastrophic crash that claimed the trooper’s life in the line of duty.

Bon has been charged with homicide by vehicle in connection with the crash. Additional court proceedings are expected as the investigation continues.

The revelation regarding Bon’s immigration status has drawn increased public attention to the case and may become a subject of further legal and political discussion as authorities continue their investigation.

On Thursday, hundreds of law enforcement officers, first responders and community members lined the route as Trooper Pahira was escorted in a solemn procession to a funeral home in Frackville, honoring the fallen trooper’s service and sacrifice.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing, and additional information is expected to be released by state and federal authorities as the case moves forward.
