WASHINGTON, D.C. — Federal authorities have released new details after a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner Saturday night forced the evacuation of President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Cabinet members, and hundreds of attendees.

According to the U.S. Secret Service and Washington officials, the incident unfolded around 8:35 p.m. at the Washington Hilton when an armed suspect allegedly charged a Secret Service security checkpoint near the main screening area outside the ballroom.

Investigators say the suspect was armed with a shotgun, handgun, and multiple knives when he rushed the checkpoint and opened fire, prompting an immediate response from Secret Service agents and surrounding law enforcement.

One Secret Service agent was struck during the encounter, but officials say the ballistic vest worn by the agent prevented serious injury. The agent was transported for treatment and is expected to recover. No other injuries were reported.

The suspect was subdued and taken into custody at the scene. Authorities believe he acted alone.

Law enforcement sources have identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of California, though formal charging documents are still being processed. Federal prosecutors announced preliminary charges including assault on a federal officer and firearm-related offenses, with additional charges possible as the investigation continues.

Inside the ballroom, chaos erupted as guests were ordered to take cover under tables while Secret Service agents rushed President Trump and other dignitaries from the venue.

President Trump later addressed the public from the White House, praising law enforcement and confirming all protected officials were unharmed.

The annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner has been postponed and is expected to be rescheduled.

Federal investigators, including the FBI and Secret Service, continue working to determine the suspect’s motive.

This remains a developing story.
