Patriots’ Mike Vrabel and Jets’ Aaron Glenn also fined; penalties on hold and could be erased with good behavior

By First Source News Staff

PHILADELPHIA — Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni has been fined $250,000 by the NFL for his conduct toward game officials, making him one of three head coaches hit with the hefty penalty this week.

ESPN confirmed through league sources Wednesday night that New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel and New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn also received $250,000 fines for similar behavior. Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer first reported the fines.

There is a significant catch. The fines are being held in abeyance, meaning they are on hold and can be rescinded if the coaches avoid further problems with officials. Breer described the punishment as “a pretty stiff penalty and a clear statement.” It has not been made public how long the coaches must stay out of trouble or how the league will judge their conduct going forward.

Message delivered at owners meetings

The fines surfaced during the NFL’s fall owners meetings in New York City, where league leaders addressed growing friction among coaches, players and officials on game days. According to Breer’s reporting, the league pointed to the three coaches’ fines as examples during those discussions.

It is not clear when the fines were issued or which specific incidents triggered them. The NFL typically does not announce fines levied against coaches, and the league has not said whether the penalties stem from single episodes or a pattern of behavior.

Sirianni’s fiery reputation

The fine is the latest chapter for Sirianni, 45, whose emotional sideline style has drawn attention throughout his six seasons in Philadelphia. He has had heated moments with referees, opposing players, coaches and even fans.

During the Eagles’ 2023 playoff game against the New York Giants, a FOX broadcast caught Sirianni swearing at a referee as Philadelphia prepared for a two-point conversion attempt.

Team owner Jeffrey Lurie has publicly acknowledged the issue. Speaking at the NFL’s annual league meetings in Orlando in March 2024, Lurie praised Sirianni’s authenticity and passion but said he worries about the coach overreacting, noting that “you don’t want to infuriate the referees.”

The Eagles had not publicly commented on the fine as of Thursday afternoon.

Vrabel and Glenn incidents

Vrabel’s most visible confrontation came in Week 4, when he was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct after profanely telling an official he had blown a call during New England’s 29-26 win at Buffalo. Afterward, Vrabel said he had made similar remarks many times as a head coach without issue and suggested the official was “a little sensitive.”

Glenn was seen on camera in an animated exchange with referee Bill Vinovich’s crew during the Jets’ Week 6 loss to the Patriots. Glenn did not address the interaction in his postgame news conference and has not spoken about it since.

Officiating under scrutiny

The fines come during a turbulent stretch for NFL officiating. Earlier this month, the league suspended line judge Jeff Seeman for two games and referee Adrian Hill for one game, and the league has also disciplined officials over their conduct toward players.

Not everyone agrees with the size of the coaches’ penalties. Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio called the fines “borderline cartoonish,” and fan reaction online has been split between criticism of the coaches and criticism of the officials.

Whether any of the three coaches ends up paying will depend on how they handle their sideline interactions the rest of the season.
