Kenroy Cummings is charged with first-degree murder, third-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter, involuntary manslaughter and other offenses in connection with the July 24 shooting death of his uncle, Shakair Moncrieffe.
Cummings has admitted to shooting Moncrieffe inside a home on Old Gate Road shortly before 2 p.m., but his defense attorney maintains the shooting was an act of self-defense.
During a preliminary hearing that lasted about an hour, District Judge Robert Hawke heard testimony from two Pennsylvania State Police troopers who responded to the incident.
According to testimony presented during the hearing, Cummings’ juvenile brother was inside the home earlier that morning when Moncrieffe allegedly became upset with him and began making threats.
The juvenile later contacted several family members, including Cummings, because he was reportedly concerned for his safety.
When Cummings arrived at the home, testimony indicated he and Moncrieffe began shoving one another. The juvenile told investigators he punched Moncrieffe twice before Cummings opened fire.
Authorities said Moncrieffe was shot seven times, including four gunshot wounds to the head.
Defense attorney Paul Lang said his client was protecting himself and his family.
“The background is he was protecting himself and his loved ones. Kenroy is innocent of all charges, and he will be acquitted at trial,” Lang said following the hearing.
Prosecutors allege Cummings left the scene after the shooting in a Kia that was later spotted by police on Schoenersville Road.
A trooper testified Monday that he pursued Cummings twice at speeds exceeding 100 mph. Troopers also attempted a PIT maneuver in an effort to stop the vehicle, but the maneuver was unsuccessful and Cummings allegedly continued fleeing.
Cummings later returned to the Allen Township home and surrendered to authorities.
He is also facing a charge of fleeing and eluding police.
Investigators said Cummings’ firearm was the only weapon recovered at the scene.
First Assistant District Attorney Robert Eyer declined to comment following Monday’s hearing.
Judge Hawke ordered all charges against Cummings to be held for court.
Cummings remains held without bail at Northampton County Jail. His next court appearance is expected on October 22.
