July 22, 2025 – Ozzy Osbourne, the legendary frontman of Black Sabbath and one of the most iconic figures in rock and heavy metal history, has passed away at the age of 76. His death was confirmed by family members, who stated that the musician died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. Osbourne’s influence on the music industry, particularly in shaping the heavy metal genre, is immeasurable.
Born John Michael Osbourne on December 3, 1948, in Birmingham, England, Osbourne rose to fame in the late 1960s as the lead vocalist of Black Sabbath. The band’s heavy, dark sound, exemplified in songs such as “Paranoid” and “Iron Man,” became a defining characteristic of the heavy metal genre. With his distinct voice and commanding presence, Osbourne became known as the “Prince of Darkness,” a title that stuck throughout his career.
Osbourne’s solo career was equally successful, with albums like Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman earning him worldwide recognition. Despite his departure from Black Sabbath in 1979 due to personal struggles, he would go on to establish a thriving solo career, marked by iconic hits and memorable performances.
In addition to his musical legacy, Osbourne became a pop culture icon through the reality TV show The Osbournes, which aired from 2002 to 2005. The show, which showcased his family life, further cemented his status as a beloved figure in entertainment.
Despite facing numerous health challenges, including a Parkinson’s diagnosis in 2019 and complications from a 2003 ATV accident, Osbourne continued to perform until his final concert in 2025. His last performance, titled Back to the Beginning, saw the reunion of the original Black Sabbath lineup and was widely regarded as one of the most memorable events in heavy metal history.
Osbourne is survived by his wife, Sharon Osbourne, and their children. His passing marks the end of an era in rock music, but his influence will continue to inspire generations of musicians and fans worldwide.
