PHILADELPHIA, PA — Three Philadelphia police officers were shot late Saturday night during an incident in West Philadelphia, according to officials.
The shooting happened around 10:33 p.m. Saturday near North 54th and Arlington Streets in the city’s Wynnefield section. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said officers were initially responding to a report of a shooting when they encountered a man at the scene.
According to police, officers engaged with the man and attempted to take him into custody when he allegedly pulled out a firearm and opened fire. Police said four officers returned fire, and three officers were struck.
The injured officers were transported to the hospital and are reported to be in stable condition. Officials said one officer was shot in the leg, another in the arm, and another in the face.
Police said the suspect was shot and killed during the exchange of gunfire. His identity has not yet been released.
Investigators also said the man may not have been connected to the original shooting call that brought officers to the area. A vehicle at the scene was reportedly found struck by gunfire.
A large police presence remained in the area overnight as investigators processed the scene.
This remains an active investigation. Additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
