Rory McIlroy won the Masters on Sunday to become only the fourth golfer in history to win consecutive titles at Augusta National Golf Club, finishing 12-under after a final round of 1-under 71.
After nearly squandering a record-setting six-shot lead at the midway point, McIlroy held on to claim his second straight green jacket — joining Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods as the only players in the tournament’s 90-year history to win in back-to-back years.
The victory came down to the final hole, where McIlroy made bogey after a wayward drive but still edged Scottie Scheffler by one shot.
McIlroy was dominant early, shooting a blistering second-round 65 to build a six-stroke lead, but stumbled in Round 3 to fall into a tie with Cameron Young heading into Sunday. He came back with a vengeance in the final round, hitting three birdies between holes eight and thirteen to build a cushion he would never relinquish.
With the win, McIlroy is $4.5 million richer and now has the chance in 2027 to become the first player ever to win three Masters in a row. The victory also gives him six major championships total, tying him with Lee Trevino, Nick Faldo, and Phil Mickelson for 12th all time.
