MINNEAPOLIS, MN – August 27, 2025
A horrifying mass shooting unfolded this morning at Annunciation Catholic Church and School in southwest Minneapolis, leaving at least two students dead and up to 20 people wounded, many of them children.
The Attack
According to Minneapolis authorities, the gunman—described as wearing all black and armed with a semi-automatic rifle—opened fire during an all-school Mass around 8:30 a.m. Witnesses say he fired 50 to 100 rounds through the stained-glass windows into the crowded sanctuary and school building.
Officials confirmed that two children were killed on site. Multiple others, including at least five students, were rushed to Children’s Minnesota Hospital, where four remain in critical condition.
Suspect Dead at the Scene
Law enforcement reported that the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the church. His identity has not yet been publicly released. Authorities emphasized there is no further threat to the community.
Massive Law Enforcement Response
The response included Minneapolis Police, Richfield Police, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), State Patrol, FBI, and ATF. Streets around the church remain blocked off as investigators continue to sweep the building, where there were also unconfirmed reports of a possible explosive device.
Reaction from Leaders
- Governor Tim Walz called the attack a “horrific act of violence” and urged Minnesotans to keep the victims, their families, and the Annunciation community in their prayers.
- Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey praised first responders for their swift action.
- President Donald Trump released a statement from Washington, saying he has been fully briefed, that the White House is monitoring developments closely, and calling for prayers nationwide.
A Community in Shock
The shooting happened just as the new school year was beginning, devastating parents, teachers, and neighbors in the tight-knit Catholic community. Families have been gathering near the school as they await word on loved ones.
