Police responded shortly after midnight Sunday to the 2200 block of Birch Street in Northampton County for a reported shooting.
According to Northampton County District Attorney Stephen Baratta, responding officers encountered a man who said he had accidentally shot his 24-year-old brother in the back of the neck.
The victim was rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital Anderson Campus with serious injuries. Baratta said the man was pronounced dead shortly before 7 a.m. Sunday.
The victim’s brother was taken in for questioning following the shooting.
Baratta confirmed that an open charge of homicide has been filed in connection with the case. Authorities had not publicly identified either the victim or the accused shooter as of Sunday evening.
The events leading up to the shooting remain under investigation. Baratta said the incident appears to involve members of the same household, but additional details surrounding what happened before the gunfire have not been released.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information is expected to be released as it becomes available.
