LOWER MACUNGIE TWP., Pa. – A woman is hospitalized after her SUV crashed into a house in Lower Macungie Township Thursday evening, igniting a fire that tore through the home.
The crash occurred just before 6:00 p.m. on the 6100 block of Sauterne Drive, according to the Lower Macungie Fire Department. Fire officials say the impact caused the vehicle to become lodged in the house, sparking a blaze that quickly spread through the structure.
Crews arrived to find heavy fire conditions and immediately began rescue operations. Firefighters helped a woman inside the home, who had been sleeping when the SUV struck, to safety. She was uninjured.
The SUV’s driver, a woman, was extricated and transported to the hospital for treatment. Her condition has not yet been released.
The flames were placed under control after a second alarm was transmitted, calling in additional mutual aid companies to assist. Firefighters remained on scene for several hours working overhaul and ensuring hotspots were extinguished.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by local authorities. The extent of damage to the home is significant, and emergency crews say the structure is currently uninhabitable.
