PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Philadelphia television station 6abc (WPVI-TV) is asking viewers across the Delaware Valley to voice their support as the station faces an early review of its broadcast license by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

The station recently launched an on-air campaign encouraging viewers to submit comments to the FCC in support of renewing WPVI-TV’s license. The effort comes after the FCC ordered an accelerated review of several ABC-owned television stations across the country, including Philadelphia’s longtime market-leading station.

According to information released by the station, viewers are being asked to share how local news coverage, emergency information, weather alerts, and community reporting provided by 6abc have impacted their lives and communities.

The review is part of a broader FCC examination involving ABC and its parent company, Disney. While license renewals are routine for broadcast stations, the accelerated review has drawn national attention due to its timing and scope.

For decades, 6abc has been one of the most recognizable media outlets in the Philadelphia region, providing local news coverage throughout southeastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. The station says public comments will help demonstrate the value local broadcasting continues to provide to communities throughout the region.

At First Source News, we have never hesitated to criticize major media organizations when warranted. Independent journalism and accountability remain essential regardless of a news outlet’s size or ownership. However, this issue extends beyond competition between media organizations.

Local television stations continue to play a critical role in delivering emergency information, severe weather alerts, public safety updates, and community-focused reporting. Whether viewers choose to get their news from large television stations, independent digital outlets, newspapers, or social media platforms, a strong and diverse local media landscape benefits the public.

The FCC’s public comment period regarding WPVI-TV’s license renewal is expected to remain open through late July.

The review process remains ongoing, and no decision regarding the station’s license has been announced.
