JACKSON TWP., N.J. – A tragic lightning strike at an outdoor archery range in Jackson Township, New Jersey, left one man dead and more than a dozen others injured Wednesday evening, officials said.
Emergency crews rushed to Black Knight Bow Benders on the 600 block of Perrineville Road around 7 p.m. after reports of multiple people struck by lightning during an archery event.
Police confirmed that Robert Montgomery, 61, of Cinnaminson, died from his injuries. Montgomery was a member of the range, according to Gene Grodzki, the club’s publicity director.
Authorities said the event was organized and attended by members of Jackson Cub Scout Pack 204. The injured victims ranged in age from 7 to 61 years old, with eight juveniles among those hurt.
Jackson Township Mayor Michael Reina told deeply saddened by the loss of life, and credited first responders for their quick action, noting that at least one victim was revived with CPR at the scene.
“Please pray for everyone involved in this tragic incident,” New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said in a statement.
In total, 14 other victims were treated for injuries, which included burns and other medical complaints, police said. Witnesses described the terrifying strike, recalling how dirt flew into the air and one club member was thrown against a tree by the force.
Officials said this is the 12th lightning-related death in the U.S. this year and the second in New Jersey. State records show 18 lightning deaths in New Jersey since 2006.
Investigators and local authorities continue to review the incident as the community mourns and supports the injured.
