LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP, Pa. — In a coordinated multi-agency operation Friday, the FBI and Philadelphia police teamed up with Lower Merion Township officers to capture suspects connected to a string of violent armored truck robberies across the Philadelphia region.
Pursuit Through City Avenue Into Montgomery County
The chase began late Friday morning when law enforcement surveillance units monitoring suspected robbery activity near City Avenue moved in to make arrests. The suspects, who were already under investigation for prior armored vehicle heists, fled the scene, leading to a high-speed pursuit that crossed from Philadelphia into Montgomery County.
Officers pursued multiple vehicles believed to be involved. One of the suspects was seen running from a white Honda Civic near Snowden Road in Bala Cynwyd, prompting an extensive ground and air search through nearby neighborhoods.
Multi-Agency Response and Arrests
By early afternoon, authorities confirmed that three suspects had been taken into custody. Two were captured in Philadelphia near 52nd and Parrish Streets, while a third was arrested in Lower Merion Township near Colwyn Lane off Conshohocken State Road.
Inside one of the abandoned vehicles, officers recovered multiple firearms, including two handguns and a long gun. No injuries were reported during the pursuit or arrests.
The operation prompted temporary shelter-in-place orders and lockdowns in portions of Lower Merion Township and at Saint Joseph’s University, which have since been lifted.
Connection to Regional Armored Truck Robberies
Investigators believe the men are tied to a series of armed robberies targeting armored vehicles throughout the Philadelphia area and surrounding suburbs over the past several months. The suspects are believed to have stolen large sums of cash and firearms in several incidents between June and August.
Authorities say one of the robberies, outside a Cheltenham supermarket earlier this year, involved the theft of several hundred thousand dollars in cash. Investigators are now reviewing evidence and surveillance footage to confirm connections between the captured suspects and those earlier crimes.
Heavy Police Presence and Community Impact
The chase and subsequent manhunt drew a large police response, with helicopters, drones, and K-9 units flooding residential streets in Bala Cynwyd and surrounding neighborhoods. Residents described the scene as chaotic, with dozens of officers canvassing yards and wooded areas in search of suspects.
Despite the intensity of the operation, officials confirmed that no civilians or officers were injured.
Investigation Ongoing
Federal and local authorities continue to process evidence and interview the suspects. Officials have not yet released the names of those arrested as the investigation remains active.
The FBI is expected to pursue federal charges due to the nature of the robberies and the involvement of armored transport vehicles
