BRISTOL BOROUGH, Pa. — A murder that haunted Bucks County for more than six decades has finally been solved.
District Attorney Jennifer Schorn announced Wednesday that a grand jury investigation has identified William Schrader, who died in 2002, as the man responsible for the rape and murder of 9-year-old Carol Ann Dougherty in 1962.

The Crime

On October 22, 1962, Carol Ann Dougherty left her Bristol Borough home on her bicycle to return library books and stopped at St. Mark’s Roman Catholic Church, where she often prayed after school. Later that day, her body was found in a stairwell leading to the choir loft. She had been sexually assaulted and murdered.

The shocking crime devastated the small riverfront community and left investigators searching for answers for more than 60 years.

The Break in the Case

According to prosecutors, the case was reopened by a panel that included the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office and Pennsylvania State Police.
The grand jury reviewed decades of preserved evidence, witness statements, and new forensic findings, concluding that William Schrader was solely responsible for the crime.

Key findings included:

  • Schrader’s own confession to a family member decades ago.
  • Eyewitness accounts placing him at the scene.
  • DNA and forensic testing performed within the last year that ruled out other suspects.
  • Additional corroborating details from historical investigative reports.

Though Schrader died in 2002, the grand jury’s formal conclusion officially identifies him as Carol Ann’s killer.

A Case That Defined a Generation

For years, Carol Ann’s death symbolized one of Bucks County’s darkest unsolved crimes. Local residents, investigators, and the Dougherty family lived with unanswered questions for decades.

“This has been a painstaking investigation involving evidence stored for decades, advances in forensic science, and unyielding dedication by our investigators,” said District Attorney Schorn. “We hope this formal finding brings a measure of peace to Carol Ann’s family and the community of Bristol Borough.”

What Happens Next

Because the suspect is deceased, there will be no criminal prosecution. The grand jury’s finding serves as the final legal conclusion to the case.
Officials plan to release additional details from the grand jury’s 53-page report in the coming weeks.

The resolution of this cold case is expected to renew interest in other long-unsolved homicides across Bucks County and the surrounding region.
