Fire-Dex, a global leader in protective gear for first responders, has officially unveiled its first-ever Fire Investigation PPE, marking a major step forward in protection designed specifically for fire investigators.
A First of Its Kind
Until now, fire investigators have often relied on traditional turnout gear — heavy, heat-retaining suits built for fire suppression — or lighter work uniforms that lacked the needed protection from contaminants and sharp debris. Fire-Dex’s new gear aims to bridge that gap, offering protection from post-fire hazards without the weight and heat stress of full structural PPE.
Built for the Job
According to the company, the new Fire Investigation PPE combines durability, flexibility, and comfort to meet the demands of post-fire scenes. Key features include:
- Moisture and debris protection using waterproof barrier materials in high-contact zones such as the knees and seat.
- Integrated knee pads for investigators who often crawl through debris or kneel during scene inspections.
- Lightweight, breathable construction that reduces heat stress during extended operations.
- Strategic ventilation panels that allow airflow while blocking harmful particulates.
- Reinforced storage with pass-through pockets and a waterproof phone compartment for evidence-gathering tools and devices.
- Certified to NFPA 1951 standards, ensuring compliance for technical rescue and non-structural operations.
Designed with Investigators in Mind
The new PPE was developed with direct input from fire investigation professionals across the United States. Investigators helped refine the balance between protection and mobility, emphasizing the need for gear that resists contamination, provides comfort in variable weather, and allows freedom of movement in confined or unstable environments.
Todd Herring, Vice President of Product Innovation and Strategy at Fire-Dex, said the project focused on filling a long-standing gap in the industry. “Everything we design at Fire-Dex is meant to help first responders be at their best,” Herring explained. “For years, investigators have had to improvise with gear not suited to their mission. This changes that.”
Timely and Practical
Fire-Dex’s introduction comes at a time when awareness of contamination and post-incident health risks is higher than ever. Post-fire scenes often contain toxins, sharp debris, and unstable surfaces. Traditional turnout gear offers high heat protection but can overheat investigators working in smoldering remains. This new line gives them a lighter, cooler, and purpose-built solution.
Department Integration
The Fire Investigation PPE fits into Fire-Dex’s broader ecosystem of non-structural protective equipment, designed to complement its existing gloves, boots, and hoods. For departments already using Fire-Dex gear, it offers a seamless addition for fire investigation, cause-and-origin teams, or forensic units.
Availability
The gear is available for order through Fire-Dex distributors nationwide. Departments can request sizing, quotes, and demonstrations through authorized channels.
