ALLENTOWN, Pa. — A woman was shot by an Allentown police officer Sunday night during a confrontation at the former Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital on South Fifth Street.
The incident happened around the 800 block of South Fifth Street at the long-vacant medical facility. Police and EMS were dispatched after reports of a woman in distress inside the building.
According to authorities, when officers and first responders made contact, the woman allegedly brandished a knife and made threats toward emergency personnel. During the confrontation, an officer fired a single shot, striking the woman.
She was immediately treated by EMS at the scene and transported to a local hospital. Her condition has not been released.
Officials say the woman was not a patient, employee, or affiliated with Good Shepherd Rehabilitation. The facility has been closed and no longer operates at that location.
No Ongoing Threat to the Public
Police emphasized that this was an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing danger to the community. There was no active shooter situation and no other injuries were reported.
The Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office and Allentown Police are conducting a joint investigation, which includes reviewing body camera footage and interviewing witnesses.
