A person was shot by law enforcement Monday afternoon near the Washington Monument following what officials described as a confrontation involving an armed suspect.
According to the U.S. Secret Service, the incident unfolded near 15th Street and Independence Avenue along the National Mall. Authorities say officers encountered an armed individual, and shots were fired during the confrontation. The suspect was struck by law enforcement gunfire.
Officials later said the suspect allegedly fired a weapon during the encounter, and a bystander was also injured in the incident. Both were transported for medical treatment. Their conditions have not yet been publicly released.
The shooting prompted a heavy law enforcement response and a temporary lockdown at the White House as a precaution. President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time for an event, which continued without interruption.
Road closures remain in effect around portions of the National Mall as investigators process the scene.
Authorities have not released the identity of the suspect, and the investigation remains ongoing.
