LeBron James Signs with Philadelphia 76ers, Begins Final Chapter of Historic NBA Career

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — In one of the biggest free-agent moves in NBA history, LeBron James is officially heading to the Philadelphia 76ers.

The four-time NBA champion and the NBA’s all-time leading scorer has agreed to a two-year, $8 million contract with the Sixers, bringing an end to weeks of speculation surrounding his future. The deal includes a player option for the second season and marks what James has indicated will likely be the final stop in his legendary career.

At 41 years old, James will enter a record-setting 24th NBA season after spending the past eight years with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he helped lead the franchise to an NBA championship in 2020. Prior to that, he won two titles with the Miami Heat and delivered Cleveland its first NBA championship in franchise history in 2016.

James reportedly considered retirement following last season before deciding he still had another championship run left. In announcing his decision, he described Philadelphia as his “last decision,” signaling this is expected to be the final chapter of one of the greatest careers the sport has ever seen.

Perhaps just as surprising as the destination is the contract itself. James accepted a deal worth just $8 million over two seasons, a fraction of what he could have earned elsewhere. The move gives Philadelphia greater financial flexibility while making it clear his top priority is competing for another NBA title.

The addition immediately transforms the 76ers into one of the favorites in the Eastern Conference. James joins a roster already featuring former MVP Joel Embiid, All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey, newly acquired Jaylen Brown, and highly touted rookie VJ Edgecombe.

Philadelphia had already made headlines this offseason with its aggressive roster moves, but landing James instantly changes the outlook for the franchise and sends a message that the Sixers are all-in on winning a championship now.

James leaves Los Angeles as one of the most influential players in Lakers history, adding another championship to his résumé while becoming the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. Now, he’ll attempt to add one more accomplishment to his historic career—bringing an NBA championship back to Philadelphia.

The move is expected to dominate headlines across the sports world and instantly becomes one of the biggest stories of the NBA offseason.
