WILMINGTON, Del. — A suspect is in custody following a double shooting Tuesday afternoon inside Wilmington Hospital that left one person dead and another person injured.
According to Wilmington police, officers were called to the hospital in the 500 block of West 14th Street around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday for reports of a shooting inside the facility. When officers arrived, they found two people suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the victims later died.
Police said a 23-year-old man was taken into custody Tuesday night in Philadelphia. Charges and extradition to Delaware are pending. Investigators have not released the suspect’s identity.
Law enforcement agencies converged on the city’s Olney section near North 9th Street, between Lindley Avenue and West Wellens Street, where the suspect was taken into custody around 9:30 p.m. A Toyota RAV4 was also towed from the scene.
Law enforcement sources told Action News that license plate reader technology played a key role in tracking movements connected to the suspect.
The identities of the victims have not been released, and the condition of the surviving victim has not been made public.
Wilmington Hospital was placed on lockdown following the shooting as law enforcement searched and secured the building. That lockdown has since been lifted, and officials said the hospital campus has reopened.
Wilmington police said the preliminary investigation indicates the shooting was a targeted and isolated incident. Law enforcement sources told ABC News that early information suggests the incident may have involved one hospital employee shooting two other employees, though police have not publicly confirmed that detail.
Brian Pfeffer, a hospital guide who was in the emergency department when the shots were fired, described the scene as intense as armed officers entered the building.
“It was super intense. I’m kind of shaking,” Pfeffer said. “God forbid anyone should have to be a part of that.”
The investigation remains active, and additional information is expected to be released as charges are filed.
