Tragic Incident Along Colorado-Utah Border
COLORADO — Three federal wildland firefighters were killed and two others were injured while battling a fast-moving wildfire along the Colorado-Utah border, marking one of the deadliest wildfire incidents in the United States this year.
Burnover Incident Claims Lives
The tragedy unfolded Saturday as firefighters responded to the rapidly growing Knowles Fire, one of several lightning-sparked wildfires burning near the state line. According to federal officials, the crew became trapped in a dangerous “burnover” incident, where flames suddenly overran firefighters before they could reach safety.
Fire shelters were deployed during the emergency, but three firefighters did not survive. Two others suffered burn injuries and were transported to a hospital for treatment. Their current conditions have not been publicly released.
Identities Withheld Pending Notification
The names of the fallen firefighters have not yet been released as authorities continue to notify their families.
Wildfires Merge, Conditions Worsen
Officials said the Knowles Fire later merged with the Gore, Jones, and Snyder Mesa fires, creating a much larger wildfire that has burned tens of thousands of acres across western Colorado and eastern Utah. The fire remains uncontained as crews continue working under extremely hot, dry, and windy conditions.
State Response and Emergency Declaration
Colorado Governor Jared Polis declared a disaster emergency, activating additional state resources and authorizing the Colorado National Guard to assist with firefighting efforts and the recovery of the fallen firefighters.
Tributes and Ongoing Investigation
The U.S. Department of the Interior and the U.S. Wildland Fire Service expressed their condolences, honoring the firefighters for making the ultimate sacrifice while protecting lives, communities, and public lands.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers wildland firefighters face each fire season as crews across the western United States battle rapidly spreading fires fueled by drought, extreme heat, and gusty winds.
The investigation into the burnover incident remains ongoing.
