ALLENTOWN, Pa. — An Allentown man is facing felony firearms charges after police say he was found carrying a rifle during an incident in downtown Allentown Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Allentown Police Department, officers from the Patrol Division and Community Outreach Unit responded around 2:24 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, to the area of 4th and Hamilton streets after receiving reports of a man armed with a rifle.
When officers arrived, they located an agitated individual who was in possession of a rifle. Members of the department’s Crisis Negotiation Team also responded to assist.
Police said officers were able to calmly de-escalate the situation after speaking with the man for a period of time. The individual was taken into custody without incident.
The investigation was turned over to the Criminal Investigations Division, which determined the suspect was a convicted felon who is prohibited from legally possessing a firearm.
As a result of the investigation, police charged David Oxenreider, 35, of Allentown, with:
- Persons Not to Possess, Use, Manufacture, Control, Sell or Transfer Firearms (Felony)
- Disorderly Conduct – Threatening Behavior (Misdemeanor)
Authorities emphasized that all criminal charges are allegations and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
The Allentown Police Department said no additional information about the investigation will be released at this time.
